Hosts Adolph Mongo, Allan Lengel and Jim Nardone ask why politicians, particularly candidates running for office, have not spoken up about motorist Susan Smith, a Black Detroit woman who was involved in a car crash with an Arab American woman on Sept. 12 on Detroit’s west side in the Warrendale neighborhood.
Smith’s attorneys this week held a press conference pushing for Detroit police to dig deeper into what they say was a racially motivated hate crime.
Smith said at a press conference last Tuesday that as many as 80 men of Arab descent gathered in the vicinity after the Arab American woman, 18, struck her car. She says some in the crowd hurled racial and sexist slurs at her. One person threatened her with a spiked bat. Others tampered with the scene, and someone stole her purse from the front seat.
Smith said the men also removed the teenage woman from the scene and took her car away. The matter is under investigation.
The hosts of the show questioned why it hasn’t been a bigger story and why politicians like Mayor Mary Sheffield and political candidates haven’t spoken up and condemned the incident.
